Shincheonji volunteer group is cleaning tombstones at the18th of May National Cemetery located in Unjung Dong, Book Gu, Gwangju on 4th of May.
“The spirit of May which has suffered from discrimination and reflection on distorted truth will overcome pain and move on to the Republic of Korea where truth overcomes falsehood."
Before commemorating the 38th anniversary of the 18th of May Gwangju Democratic Movement, Gwangju branch of Shincheonji volunteer group (Branch manager Jae Sub Ji) arranged an event to comfort the spirit of the victims and remember the spirit of May Gwangju.
On the morning of 4th of May, about 800 people gathered at the 18th of May National Cemetery located in Unjung Dong, Book Gu in order to take part in 'the 38th anniversary of the 18th of May Gwangju Democratic Movement visiting and tombstones cleaning'. Gwangju branch of Shincheonji volunteer group has been steadily visiting here every May since 2006 year to clean tombstones and comfort the spirit of the victims.
Before cleaning tombstones at the 18th of May National Cemetery in Unjung Dong, Book Gu, Jae Sub Ji (Branch Manager of Gwangju & Jeonnam) is giving commemorative speech.
On this day, the programs of the event are divided into two sessions. The first session is for paying our respects towards victims and the 2nd session is for cleaning tombstones. Jae Sub Ji, branch manager of Gwangju & Jeonnam, layed flowers and burned incense there with people involved in the May 18 Gwangju Democratic Movement and victims as well.
Jae Sub Ji, branch manager of Gwangju & Jeonnam, emphasized "The souls that are asleep in front of us here were our family members and neighbors who shared affection with. What they cried for was democracy and wish to live in peaceful world without wars. The blood and spirit to preserve democracy have made Gwangju what it is today and we have to do so that their sacrifices are not ashamed of." in his speech.
He also talked about the reasons why the activity of cleaning tombstones has been carried out steadily for over 10 years. "This is because we would like to honor the greatness of the souls of the noble victims and show the light of pro-democratic movement of Gwangju to the world. And we also hope that the truth of the May 18 Gwangju Democratic Movement, which has been distorted so far, will be clarified based on legal grounds.
At this anniversary, there is a memorial performance of 'The March to Thee' which all people sang in unison at last anniversary. This time, all participants sang it once again, which was very touching.

The people involved in and victims of 18th of May who participated in the event expressed their gratitude saying "We hope young people to have a proper view of history and look at the spirit of May. Thank these many people for remembering and feeling pain like they did. I could feel their hearts throughout the event, and it made me cry during the commemorative speech or performance at the celebration."
After the event, the volunteers paid silent tribute with hearts of repaying for lofty sacrifice and remembering spirit of Gwangju, then started to clean tombstones while talking to the spirits.
Ms. Yeong Im Kim who had been participated the event for a long time said "Still there are people who twist and blame 5.18 history, they have wrong perception toward it. I hope the truth to be uncovered as soon as possible to comfort the spirit of the victims. This wrong perception is very similar with the perception and misunderstanding of many people toward Shincheonji Church of Jesus, I will take effort first to break these so they can be removed quickly."
Shincheonji volunteer group of Gwangju branch has carried out many volunteer activities to practice love towards neighbor and country.
